Pharmacist Communication | Preceptor Written 1 credit hour

Topic discussions are a powerful yet often underutilized tool for guiding learner development in experiential pharmacy education. This course discusses how pharmacy preceptors can intentionally design, facilitate, and adapt topic discussions—using a range of discussion types and facilitation approaches—to meet learners where they are and promote progressive growth in clinical reasoning and professional judgment. You will gain practical strategies for planning, implementing, and troubleshooting topic discussions in alignment with learner readiness, practice demands, and your evolving role as a preceptor. 

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the role of topic discussions in supporting learner development across experiential pharmacy settings.
2. Differentiate topic discussion types and facilitation approaches based on learner readiness, rotation expectations, and practice environment.
3. Select facilitation techniques that promote active learner engagement and accountability during topic discussions.
4. Recognize common barriers to effective topic discussions and identify strategies to address them.
5. Develop a plan to intentionally incorporate topic discussions into your experiential teaching practice.
