Your technicians need a strong foundation to contribute safely and confidently in the pharmacy. Choosing training that connects pharmacy knowledge to daily responsibilities can help you support their growth and build a more consistent approach across your team.
Before selecting a program, ask these five questions.
1. Does the training address the requirements that apply to our team?
Start with the state requirements and employer expectations that apply to your technicians. Identify what training they need, how completion must be documented, and whether national certification is part of their path.
Training, state registration or licensure, and national certification serve different purposes. A program’s PTCB recognition is a useful consideration for certification preparation, but you should separately verify whether it meets applicable state training requirements.
Ask the provider: “How can we evaluate this program against our state requirements and workplace expectations?”
2. Will technicians learn the foundations they need for daily practice?
Look for comprehensive instruction in pharmacy operations, prescription processing, medication knowledge, calculations, law, medication safety, and professional responsibilities.
The goal is to help technicians understand their role, recognize when to involve the pharmacist, and connect what they learn to the work your team performs.
Ask the training provider: “How does the curriculum prepare technicians for their responsibilities in the pharmacy?”
3. How will technicians apply what they learn?
Look for opportunities to work through realistic situations and connect course concepts to your practice setting. Case scenarios, knowledge checks, workbooks, and guided workplace activities can help make that connection.
For example, a technician might use a practice workbook to document your pharmacy’s policies or discuss a medication-safety scenario with a qualified mentor.
Ask the training provider: “What tools help us connect online learning with workplace practice?”
4. Can we fit the training into our workflow?
Consider both the learning format and the support your technicians will need. Self-paced training offers scheduling flexibility, but learners still need time to study and opportunities to ask questions.
Decide who will guide workplace activities, how you will schedule learning time, and when you will check progress. For multiple locations, identify how each site will support a consistent experience.
Ask the training provider: “What time, resources, and staff involvement should we plan for?”
5. How will we evaluate completion and workplace readiness?
Understand what successful program completion involves and what documentation you will receive. Ask how assessments and experiential activities help you identify areas that need reinforcement.
Then plan how your team will evaluate technicians’ readiness for specific responsibilities. Course completion complements employer onboarding, supervision, and competency assessment.
Ask the training provider: “What does completion demonstrate, and what should we assess in our own pharmacy?”
