Mind the Gap: Understanding Generational Differences of Learners

This dynamic pharmacy education course will illustrate how preceptors can identify the five generations and trace the historical events that have shaped generational perspectives and technological preferences. The course content will provide tools and resources for carrying out the precepting roles of instructing, modeling, coaching, and facilitating. Real-world case scenarios will delve into these key areas, enabling preceptors to tailor communication and teaching methods to learners from different generations. After completion of this course, preceptors will be able to foster a more impactful and inclusive educational experience for all learners.

Upon successful completion of this knowledge-based CPE course, pharmacy preceptors should be able to:
1. Identify the five generations using dates of birth
2. List the major historical events from each generation’s childhood that may have shaped their worldview
3. Contrast each generation’s technology tools and information sources
4. Describe how to use the 4As of learning to fulfill the four main precepting roles across the generations
5. Apply generational attributes to case vignettes to identify ways to tailor communication and teaching methods to meet the needs of the learner.
