This 4-hour training prepares pharmacy technicians to support point-of-care testing services in the pharmacy setting, in alignment with current clinical practices and regulatory requirements.  

Designed as a microcredential program, this course provides focused, practical training and awards a digital badge upon successful completion.  

Course content includes:

  • Compliance requirements, including how to obtain a CLIA waiver 
  • Procedures for PPE, specimen collection, and device selection 
  • Testing procedures for diabetes and hyperlipidemia 
  • Administration of tests for COVID-19, Influenza, HIV, Hepatitis C, and Group A Strep 
  • Documentation of hands-on specimen collection techniques tailored to pharmacy workflow 

Technicians also explore current trends in pharmacy practice, the evolving role of technicians in testing services, and appropriate follow-up actions after testing to support patient care. 

This training emphasizes practical application, including selecting appropriate testing methods, collecting specimens, and supporting workflow integration within the pharmacy. 

The program is designed to help pharmacy technicians build specialized skills, contribute more directly to patient care services, and prepare for expanded responsibilities within an evolving pharmacy practice environment.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the full course, pharmacy technicians should be able to:
1. Describe current trends in pharmacy practice and point of care testing (POCT)
2. List the pros/cons of implementing point of care testing
3. Identify the role pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can play in providing point of care testing services
4. Describe the process to obtain a clinical laboratory improvement amendment (CLIA) waiver license
5. List appropriate follow-up actions needed after conducting point of care testing (both internal and external)
6. Review the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Self-Assessment Checklist for Good Testing Practice
7. Find CLIA resources and locate forms to assist in standardizing the point of care testing process
8. Review personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements for various POCTs
9. Compare and contrast the devices needed to administer an appropriate POCT
10. Collect specimen for diagnostic testing through nasal, throat, or blood routes
11. Describe patient characteristics for an individual at risk for diabetes and/or hyperlipidemia or who might benefit from a wellness screening
12. Describe patient characteristics for an individual at risk for infectious disease, including HIV, Hepatitis C, Group A Streptococcus, Influenza, and COVID-19
