Legal Lessons for Managing Challenging Patients

Legal Lessons for Managing Challenging Patients

Chances are you’ve encountered a “difficult” patient who has disrupted your pharmacy’s operation. Maybe they made illegal or unreasonable requests of pharmacy staff or insisted on preferential treatment. This course discusses legal cases and lessons learned when pharmacists have attempted to salvage the relationship or dismissed the patient from the pharmacy.

Upon successful completion of this knowledge-based CPE course, pharmacists should be able to:
1. Discuss the behaviors of patients who may be considered difficult due to their demands or expectations of pharmacy staff.
2. Review situations in which pharmacy patients have alleged unlawful acts by pharmacy staff who have refused to comply with unacceptable patient requests.
3. Describe a plan for effective management of the “difficult” patient.
