Lean on Me: Specialty Pharmacist Provision of Supportive Care in Oncology (Pharmacist)

Lean on Me: Specialty Pharmacist Provision of Supportive Care in Oncology (Pharmacist)

Patients with a cancer diagnosis have numerous burdens to bear – emotional distress, physical barriers – including adverse drug events, financial hardships, and mental exhaustion … just to name a few. Yet sometimes, the best interventions for patients with cancer come from a specialty pharmacist and their team in the form of supportive care. This course will review the most common ailments experienced by patients prescribed oral oncolytic medications as treatment for cancer and the numerous ways in which clinical pharmacy teams can mitigate these adverse drug events. Also, we will discuss how a specialty pharmacist can anticipate and prevent adverse events associated with oral oncolytic medications with thorough prospective and retrospective drug utilization reviews. If you need a refresher on how to keep your patients with cancer feeling fresh, this course is for you.

Upon successful completion of this application-based CPE course, pharmacists should be able to:
1. List five of the most common adverse events patients with cancer experience while taking an oral oncolytic
2. Discuss opportunities for the specialty pharmacist to anticipate adverse events associated with an oral oncolytic
3. Compare and contrast pharmacologic vs. nonpharmacologic therapy options to treat oral oncolytic medication-related adverse events and their appropriate use in patients with cancer
4. Describe the actions a specialty pharmacist can take to help alleviate or eliminate adverse events associated with an oral oncolytic medication
5. Create a supportive care plan for a patient with cancer suffering from an oral oncolytic induced adverse event(s)
