Advanced Certificate in Risk Management for APPE Students

Advanced Certificate in Risk Management for APPE Students

As you begin your Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences, you are expected to “practice” as a pharmacist. That includes demonstrating your clinical, professional, ethical, and legal knowledge to your preceptors. This review provides you with everything you need to know about regulatory compliance (rules and laws) and risk management (error prevention), plus a jumpstart on preparing for the MPJE.

Upon successful completion of this course, pharmacy residents should be able to:
1. List strategies for the avoidance of a regulatory violation or a pharmacy malpractice case.
2. Discuss newly expanded professional roles for pharmacists and the legal/regulatory expectations within those new professional roles.
3. Describe the foundational legal responsibility of an institutional pharmacy department for the accurate processing of prescription orders.
4. Describe the evolving legal responsibility of an institutional pharmacy department for the prevention of negative patient outcomes and the promotion of positive patient outcomes in drug therapy.
5. Evaluate the legal/regulatory responsibilities of pharmacists who provide consultative services to long-term care facilities.
6. Explain effective strategies for compliance with legal requirements for drug safety and efficacy, as regulated by the federal Food and Drug Administration.
7. Explain effective strategies for compliance with legal requirements for the prevention of non-medical use of pharmaceutical controlled substances as regulated by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration.
8. Avoid the use of language that could be considered as defamatory toward the prescriber of an opioid prescription when that must be declined due to concerns regarding legitimacy.
9. Identify successful management techniques for avoiding legal entanglements by de-escalating uncomfortable and confrontational situations involving a stressed-out patient.
10. Design a pharmacy practice quality improvement system that will identify threats to quality pharmacy practice and implement techniques to avoid regulatory compliance problems.
