Professionalism is a core expectation of pharmacy practice, and preceptors play a critical role in helping pharmacy students and residents understand and meet that standard. This course explores how professionalism is defined, how unprofessional conduct can be addressed within academic and experiential settings, and the legal considerations involved in disciplinary actions. By gaining clarity on your responsibilities as a preceptor, you’ll be better prepared to guide learners, uphold professional standards, and protect both your practice site and your license.
Upon successful completion of this knowledge-based CPE course, pharmacists should be able to:
1. Describe the constitutional rights of pharmacy learners in the academic disciplinary process
2. Recognize the difference between pharmacy learner professionalism standards and pharmacy practice professionalism standards.
3. Explain the extent and limits of deference that the legal system affords to pharmacy faculty and pharmacy administrators in discipline of pharmacy learners for actions that violate standards for professionalism.
