This course highlights the pressing health inequities faced by the LGBTQ community and emphasizes the pivotal role of pharmacy professionals in addressing these challenges. Course content focuses on equipping pharmacy professionals across all specialties with the necessary tools to create affirming environments, understand appropriate LGBTQ terminology, recognize the impact of discrimination on health outcomes, identify disparities, and implement actionable strategies for enhancing the health and well-being of LGBTQ individuals.

This course satisfies the California Board of Pharmacy cultural competency requirement as defined in BPC section 4231 (12.2023).

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this knowledge-based CPE course, pharmacists should be able to:
1. Discuss appropriate terminology describing the LGBTQ community.
2. Recognize the link between discrimination and negative health outcomes.
3. Discuss specific health disparities experienced by the LGBTQ community.
4. Explain the impact of intersectionality on disparities faced by marginalized groups.
5. Review communication skills that use inclusive and affirming language.
6. Identify opportunities for pharmacy teams to create affirming environments of care for LGBTQ individuals.
7. Describe strategies to positively impact the health of those within the LGBTQ community.
