The AGA has issued new clinical guidelines that outline when to use new irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) medications, when to rely on old drugs, and when to use over-the-counter medications to treat patients with IBS-C (constipation) or IBS-D (diarrhea). In this course, Dr. Zumach discusses the guidelines and helps you provide personalized drug therapy recommendations for your patients.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this application-based CPE course, pharmacists should be able to:
1. Review epidemiology, pathophysiology, symptoms, and diagnoses of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with diarrhea (IBS-D) and constipation (IBS-C).
2. Describe key features of the American Gastroenterological Association’s (AGA) clinical updates for management of IBS-D and IBS-C and chronic gastrointestinal pain in disorders of gut-brain interaction.
3. Determine realistic goals of therapy in a patient with IBS.
4. Develop pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapy recommendations for a patient with IBS based on practice guidelines and applicable primary literature.
