Pearls in Psychiatric Pharmacy

Pearls in Psychiatric Pharmacy

Nearly one in five adults lives with a mental illness and nearly one in twenty lives with a serious mental illness. Because of this, pharmacists in all practice areas are likely to encounter patients living with a mental illness. Join us for this customizable program, tailored to three different practice areas, that will provide you with the most pertinent information you need to know when caring for those patients.

Upon successful completion of this knowledge-based CPE course, pharmacists should be able to:
1. Discuss the epidemiology of commonly encountered mental illnesses, the DSM-V diagnostic criteria, and appropriate screening tools
2. Explain legal considerations for individuals with mental illness, including civil and forensic commitments, involuntary psychiatric holds, and the role of community mental health centers
3. Recognize opportunities for interventions and special considerations when conducting a medication reconciliation for individuals with mental illness
4. Discuss how mental health conditions contribute to the management of physical health medical conditions
5. Apply psychiatric pharmacy pearls to different practice settings, including community-based practice, health system care, and non-direct patient care
