Defaming the Prescriber (Pharmacist)

Defaming the Prescriber (Pharmacist)

Pharmacies have been sued by prescribers for defamation based on perceived insults allegedly verbalized by pharmacy personnel when discussing prescription refusals with patients. This course examines a strategy and appropriate language to use when a patient requests justification for declining to fill a controlled substance prescription.

Upon successful completion of this knowledge-based CPE course, pharmacists should be able to:
1. Discuss the pharmacist’s responsibility to screen controlled substance prescriptions and the circumstances in which controlled substance prescriptions must be declined.
2. Recommend safe language to use when explaining to a patient why a controlled substance prescription must be declined.
3. Develop a strategy for the avoidance of derogatory and potentially defamatory language about the prescriber of controlled substances.
