Cardiovascular Risk: Do Omega-3 Fatty Acids REDUCE-IT?

Cardiovascular Risk: Do Omega-3 Fatty Acids REDUCE-IT?
Recently, an emergence of non-statin alternatives including omega-3 fatty acid-based products have demonstrated reduction in important cardiovascular endpoints. Where do these agents fit in patient care? Join us this month for our Journal Club discussion on how icosapent ethyl compares to other non-statin alternatives and previous literature examining use of omega-3 fatty acids.
Upon successful completion of this application-based course, pharmacists should be able to:
1. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria of REDUCE-IT, identify an appropriate candidate for icosapent ethyl.
2. Counsel a patient on the use icosapent ethyl including dosing, adverse effects and expected benefits and risks.
3. Compare other non-statin alternatives including PCSK9 inhibitors and ezetimibe with regard to the clinical efficacy when added to statin based regimens.
4. Discuss strengths and limitations of the REDUCE-IT trial.
5. Discuss how the REDUCE-IT trial compares to previous trials that have examined omega-3 fatty acid based products.
